entr'acte

intervals of use is a project developed as part of the collaborative exhibition entr’acte at the palace theatre, swansea (2025). responding to the exhibition’s theme of pause and transition, the work treats the café space as an entr’acte—an interval within the ongoing life of the building. by placing archival photographs and historical advertisement text onto everyday objects, artists millie jones and amelia peacock extend entr’acte’s focus on time, memory, and the in-between moments that shape how spaces are experienced.

coasters placed on café tables feature images from the theatre’s past, spanning its former life as a performance venue and its later years as a nightclub, allowing visitors to physically engage with fragments of the building’s history during moments of rest. text and advertisements printed onto the chairs are drawn from original theatre programmes, reintroducing traces of past performances, audiences, and cultural life once rooted in the space.

through these subtle, site-responsive interventions, intervals of use highlights how history persists within everyday routines. in keeping with the ethos of entr’acte, the café becomes a living interval that connects past and present, inviting visitors to reflect on how the legacy of the palace theatre continues not only through architecture, but through simple acts of sitting, pausing, and looking.

jones and peacock would like to thank the west glamorgan archive service for generously providing the archival materials used in this project.
